Neil Bacon though is one of those conceited men who thinks everyone loves him. He thinks his Oxford reputation means he is better than anyone. The truth is he isn't better than the average fat ground hog. Neil can be very incompetent at managing organisations. The ruling against him by the Information Commissioner on Reference RFA0035379 is indicative of his lax attitude to data protection.
Neil Bacon is of course the golden boy of the medical establishment. He still remains favoured by the General Medical Council and the Department of Health. Dr Crippen tells us that Bacon should be ashamed of himself. Of course he should be ashamed of himself for being the General Medical Council's associate.
Neil Bacon has opted to publish patient opinions. At no point does he say he is going to seek the patient's consent in writing when publishing their views/data. Here is the guidance on confidentiality by the General Medical Council.
This confidentiality guidance works against doctors/GPs because they are effectively gagged from defending themselves against scurrilous and malicious allegations made against them. This has been seen in the Southall et al cases. I personally do not feel it is right to allow patients to post uncontrolled material without concrete evidence. Given the ruling against him at the Information Commissioner, can Bacon assure patients that the medical data they place on the internet will be confidential and will not be used for other purposes? Can he assure the patient population that they will not be reported to the local PCTs and ousted from their GP practices? He can't assure them of any such thing. Is is website another online database? Neil Bacon cannot assume implied consent because he won't know whether the patient data or opinion is actually from the patient.
Dr Neil Bacon cannot assure us of any of these things. That is because life for Neil revolves around tea with the General Medical Council and dinner with the Department of Health. You just have to look at the internet waves to see how many doctors dislike Neil Bacon. I am pleasantly glad that they have come to round to my way of thinking. It has taken everyone more than 6 years but hey, better late then never! Bacon is currently selling doctors out. There is no debate about that issue. The General Medical Council has been negligent in backing such a wesbite that isn't about patient care but about catching doctors to make up for their post Shipman Targets. Bacon has egg on his face. He knows it, the world knows it. Now for the takedown of iwantgreatcare.org? Who is going to complain to the GMC about Neil Bacon first? Better still, who is going to sue Neil Bacon for libel? I have worn that teeshirt back many years ago, time for the new brand of rebellion like http://ratemybacon.com/
Better still, I think we should set arch doctor gobbler Penny Mellor a task of beta testing Neil's website. Rumour has it that she has doctors for dinner with a drop of cianti. According to Mellor, paediatricians taste better but perhaps she would like to try a nephrologist instead. We all need a change in this days recession. She may need salt and pepper for Neil. Neil is rather bland these days. Gone are the days when his looks could excuse his bad behaviour. If Neil Bacon's website can stand the test of Mellor's camp then the website maybe ready for the patient world. So, I want to see if Bacon's website can stand the "Mellor Test".
Mellor uses colourful words like "fraudster, perverting the course of justice, murderer, child abuser" against doctors. Is Neil's website likely to survive that? Penny Mellor could tell us a thing or two about her visit to a doctors only web site and the remarks about patients and their relatives therein. What was that about security Neil?
