Big Bad Wolf. The Department of Wealth

DOH - Large Teeth. No Balls

Well, after a decade of campaigning on various issues on the recording of mortality statistics in the UK, it seems that Andrew Mitchell MP has finally decided to be nice.

Today, I received an email that he would be approaching the big bad Wolf, The Department of Health. So I suspect that after 10 years of assuming I was some little doctor without a brain, the Conservatives have decided that I may well have a point and a brain. This is progress from my side because no one has sat down and read what I have written by letter or email for the last decade. It seems that they are starting to read it now.

Anyhow, I am thankful to the Conservatives Party who have taken their time to see the issues I have raised but it is better late then never. My point is that the UK has the highest death rate in Europe according to the World Health Organisation statistics, and it is time ward mortality rates were made compulsory nationally. It is also time we stopped blaming doctors for everything. System failure is actually to blame. System failure can only be detected/corrected locally by monitoring mortality statistics. The logic here is that if I hadn't raised the problem on Ward 87, there would have been no way of detecting poor care as it is not compulsory to detect mortality rate in the NHS. The NHS cannot rely on the good will of a whistleblower because there ain't many of us left. Thats because they are all in Australia :).

It is time to stop looking at individuals but act on the systems they work with.

Individuals are not to blame if the system they work in encourages and rewards bad work

www.chfg.org - This shows what can be done when a family works to stop their tragedy happening to anyone else.

Mrs Bromily died in an avoidable anaesthetic cock up, her husband Martin now works to improve systems within the NHS to stop it happening to other patients. He comes from the airline industry - he is some guy.
